Rules that apply to every pair

  • Remove laces and insoles first and clean them separately.
  • Dry brush before wet cleaning — rubbing in dry mud with water spreads it.
  • Use cool or lukewarm water. Hot water can loosen glue and shrink materials.
  • Air-dry in shade with paper stuffed inside, changed every few hours. Strong sun yellows white soles and fades colours; heaters and dryers warp shoes.
  • Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Monsoon care

Wet shoes left closed grow mould quickly in humid weather. Stuff with newspaper, keep in a ventilated spot with a fan, and store with silica gel sachets once dry. Don’t store damp pairs in their boxes.

Should you use the washing machine?

Only for canvas and some knit shoes, in a laundry bag, on a cold, gentle cycle, without spin — and never for leather, suede or shoes with visible glue. Brands generally advise against machine washing because it can void warranties.

Questions people ask

How do I whiten yellowed soles?
Light yellowing can be reduced with a sole cleaner or a paste of baking soda and a little dish soap. Deep oxidation needs special sole-whitening products; results vary.
Can I use bleach?
Never on leather, suede or coloured parts. Diluted bleach can damage glue and turn some white materials yellow.
How often should I clean my sneakers?
Wipe them after each heavy wear and do a full clean when dirt builds up. Regular light cleaning is easier on the materials than occasional deep cleaning.
